About

The LNDS Data Catalogue demonstrates the type of dataset metadata catalogue which LNDS can provide to support data discoverability in a wide range of contexts or domains. Its purpose is to illustrate how such a catalogue helps you navigate and discover datasets through structured metadata.

Developed and managed by Luxembourg National Data Service (LNDS), located in Belval, Luxembourg, the catalogue infrastructure is actively used in a number of projects, including the GDI User Portal, Luxembourg's National Health Datasets Catalogue and the Luxembourg AI Factory datasets catalogue.

As guardians of the catalogue infrastructure, our team at LNDS is dedicated to ensuring utmost the data quality and reliability, by constantly working to update and refine the metadata framework, to ensure it serves as an invaluable resource.

Our Mission

The LNDS Data Catalogue serves as a demonstrator showcasing how a focused gateway can support the discovery of sensitive and restricted data through high-quality metadata. It is designed to facilitate seamless access to specialised arrays of datasets for various stakeholders while respecting the specific constraints and legal requirements of each domain. The catalogue's flexible design allows it to be tailored to the needs of any domain.

Our Commitment

We are dedicated to fostering a culture of data transparency, focusing specifically on sensitive and restricted data. We continually aim to enhance the catalogue's functionality and user experience, inviting you to explore how our catalogue could support your restricted and sensitive data needs. Please note: The LNDS Data Catalogue provides a metadata-based overview of datasets but does not store the data itself. The access to individual datasets is governed by domain-appropriate data access requests, which can be integrated with the catalogue infrastructure.

Our Metadata Model: DCAT-AP 3

The core of LNDS Data Catalogue is a well-established and widely used metadata model, the Data Catalog Vocabulary Application Profile 3 (DCAT-AP 3). This model is diligently developed to ensure that the metadata is structured, standardised, and readily interpretable, and can be adapted to suit different contexts, such as the DCAT-AP-LU profile used in the Luxembourg public sector or the HealthDCAT-AP profile used in the European Health Data Space (EHDS). Ideal for researchers, policy makers, or data enthusiasts, our metadata model empowers you to pinpoint necessary information with precision and ease.

Open Metadata - Restricted Data

The LNDS Data Catalogue focuses on cataloguing metadata for restricted data. While the metadata is openly accessible and provides general information about various datasets, the actual data requires special access due to its sensitive nature. This approach ensures a balance of transparency and strict adherence to data protection and privacy standards.

How to Access Restricted Data

Accessing restricted data involves a process called a Data Access Request. Users must submit a formal request to the data holder, either directly or via LNDS, to initiate this process. This ensures that sensitive information is responsibly managed and accessed only by authorised individuals. For more details, contact LNDS.

How to set up a new Catalogue

If you'd like to set up a catalogue portal in the style of the LNDS Data Catalogue for your project or domain, please get in touch. We would love to hear from you! We will guide you through the process of setting up your catalogue and collecting dataset metadata into it.
